The 12 Days of Christmas Movies: Day 3

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas is a highly heartwarming and delightful movie that is actually made up of three separate stories told to show the different aspects of Christmas. The first involves Donald Duck in "Stuck on Christmas". Huey, Dewey, and Louie waken on Christmas morning and proceed to excitedly open presents. After spending the day with family and sledding, they wish for it to be Christmas everyday. As expected, this wish doesn't turn out exactly as planned. The wish is ended only when they learn that Christmas is about family and spending time together rather than the presents.

Our next story has Goofy and Max in "A Very Goofy Christmas". To be honest, this is not my favorite segment. It always feels very forced and like someone said "We need to have a story about those less fortunate with a child learning about the true meaning of giving." While I have nothing against that nor people who go out to make sure as many children as possible have a happy Christmas, this application feels forced and like checking off a box. There's also the main plot regarding Max doubting the existence of Santa Claus. Which also feels a little forced. It's nice but, not a memorable part of the film.

The last story is my favorite and I could watch it everyday leading up to Christmas. "The Gift of the Magi" has Mickey and Minnie thinking of each other. While neither has much in the way of money, they still want to give each other a special Christmas present. Mickey hopes to buy a chain for Minnie's watch while Minnie hopes to buy a case for Mickey's harmonica. Sadly, neither Mickey nor Minnie receive the money they were expecting for the gifts. Mickey trades his harmonica for Minnie's chain while Minnie sells her watch for Mickey's harmonica case. While both are saddened by what they gave up, both still can feel the love and happiness that comes from Christmas and being cared for.
